Night vision infra red. I'll explain something about the process in the other two shots posted today.

The Star Theatre in Invermay was built in 1937 in the Art Deco Moderne style. This is one of the original ceiling lights in the restored building.

It started as a night out to see the Italian movie on the life of Caravaggio at the Star Theatre in Invermay. As is often the case I will try to think of some way to link it to my photography. So what if I try to adapt my converted infra red camera to take night vision shots of the interior of the cinema while the movie screens?

Well this is the result. The colour is entirely that produced in camera (though we are most used to seeing green tinged night vision images). But since the cinema was in darkness, apart from the light streaming to the screen (and you can see how this shows up on the infra red images), what we see here is entirely night vision.

I am aware that the Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto has produced a series of photographs of entire movies playing out before his still camera. The result is an empty cinema and a pure white screen. But these are exposures as long as the length of the movie itself. That was not possible here, so what I have is moments of time as the movie unfolds on the screen.

Following the method for taking night vision infra red I described in the previous shot, I wanted to capture as much as possible the interior of the Star Theatre as the movie screened. This is absolutely impossible with a single shot.

The solution came in following the method employed by British artist David Hockney during the 1970s. Hockney is a fascinating figure with a strong interest in the role of photography in society. DAVID HOCKNEY on Photography

One of the things Hockney wanted to achieve with his Polaroids was to capture the links between time and space in a photographic image. He achieved this through the use of collages. One way of seeing how this works is to compare it with the Cubist approaches to painting. So by bringing together a series of shots from the interior of the cinema, I was able to represent the entire space, and even capture my shadow in the process.
